Molecular distillation is an important separation technique widely used in the fields of traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine. Although molecular distillation is used in both fields, they have some differences in the practical application of molecular distillation because of their different application purposes and methods.



Molecular distillation in traditional Chinese medicine.


In traditional Chinese medicine, molecular distillation is often used to extract active ingredients from plants, such as essential oils, aromatic substances and alkaloids. These active ingredients can be used to make products such as herbal tablets, medicinal wines, spices and cosmetics.

The active ingredients in herbal medicines are usually found in the flowers, leaves, roots, bark, fruits, seeds and other parts of the plant, and they are usually non-polar compounds. For example, solvents such as ethanol, acetone and benzene can be prepared by molecular distillation which can be used to prepare high purity pharmaceutical ingredients and pharmaceutical formulations. In addition, molecular distillation can be used to prepare high-purity compounds such as alkaloids, hormones, and vitamins, which can be used in the preparation of drugs or as pharmaceutical raw materials.

In western pharmaceuticals, the application of molecular distillation is usually carried out at medium to high temperatures to obtain high purity compounds. For example, molecular distillation for the preparation of high purity hormones is usually carried out at temperatures of 200-300°C.
