1. What is light scattering?
When light passes through a non-uniform environment, the phenomenon that part of the light changes its direction of propagation is called light scattering, and this part of the light that changes the direction of propagation is called scattered light. The essence of light scattering phenomenon is the interaction between light and matter.



2. Interaction between particles and light
Microscopically, when a beam of light shines on particles, part of the light is scattered, and part of the light is reflected, refracted, and absorbed. For a few special substances, fluorescence, phosphorescence, etc. may also be produced. When the incident light is coherent monochromatic light, these scattered lights form a specific diffraction pattern after coherence. Mie scattering theory is the scientific expression of this phenomenon. If the particles are spherical, a diffraction pattern called an Airy disk is observed in a plane perpendicular to the incident light.
